Can I open long and short positions with CFDs?

CFDs offer the ability to invest in either rising or falling markets. If you aim to invest in an asset’s price gain, you would buy the CFD, opening a 'long' position. If you want to invest in an asset’s falling price, you can sell a CFD, which means opening a 'short' position. With either option, it’s the price difference between the opening and closing prices that determines your profit or loss.

Can I have a short and a long position for an asset at the same time?

You can only hold an open position in one direction per asset. This means that if you have an open position in one direction, placing an order in another direction will reduce your existing position or close it completely and open a new position in the opposite direction.

For example, if you are 10 units of AAPL long, and you place a sell order for 2 units, you'll have a long position of 8 units.

If you subsequently place a sell order for 10 units, it will be split into 2 orders. The first order of 8 units will close out your open position, and the second order will open a short position of 2 units.
