Card verification and pre-authorisation

Card verification

When you add a new card to a payment service like PayPal, Google Pay, or Apple Pay, the payment processor may initiate a small transaction to verify your card details. These verification transactions usually charge nothing or a very small amount (a few cents).

They also revert back to your account once your card has been verified by the payment processor. You can check the reversal date in-app by tapping the transaction. The reversal date is in the 'Status' section. These transactions will appear as 'Card Verification' in your app.

I get transaction errors when adding a card to Google Wallet

When manually adding cards to Google Pay, some customers may see transaction decline errors, depending on which card they added:

  • Local card: ‘Credit functionality not enabled’
  • Global debit card: ‘Global debit card used in Brazil’ or 'Declined to avoid fees'

Despite these errors, the card will be added normally to your Google Wallet.

Pre-authorisation

A pre-authorization is a temporary hold on your card, often used by hotels or car rental companies to ensure sufficient funds. We can’t cancel a pre-authorisation hold from our side. It can only be lifted when the authorization expires or if the merchant releases the funds.

If there's a duplicate transaction, contact the merchant to resolve it.
