How to spot a fake Boleto

How do fraudsters manipulate Boletos?

Fraudsters may create fake Boletos by editing barcodes, redirecting funds, and adding false information to make them appear legitimate.

Tips for spotting potential scams

First, check for red flags such as unusual typos, unrecognised senders, or issues with barcode scanning. Also be cautious if the Boleto arrives unexpectedly or is linked to an unknown purchase.

Next, verify the barcode information by ensuring that the first three digits of the barcode match the issuing bank’s code. Check if the digits at the top and bottom of the Boleto are identical. And after scanning, confirm that the bank code matches the displayed bank name and logo.

Confirm the beneficiary information by checking if the CPF/CNPJ aligns with the official seller’s data. Ensure the beneficiary’s name is correct, as misspellings could indicate fraud. Watch out for altered Boletos — always check that the document has come directly from the provider before paying it.
