Bonds basics

A bond is a fixed-income instrument that represents a loan made by an investor to a borrower. Bonds are used by governments and corporations for financing instead of a bank loan. The bond issuer receives the needed funding during the bond offering phase.

Generally, investors receive periodic interest (coupon) payments until the bond reaches maturity. At that point, the bond’s principal amount is repaid to the investor.

Coupon payments

Typically, coupon payments are made annually, but the frequency can vary depending on the bond. The amount you receive depends on how much you've purchased. Coupons can take time to settle but are typically paid within 2 business days of the official coupon date.
