Stock basics
What is a stock?
A stock is a financial instrument that entitles the holder to a fraction of ownership in a publicly listed company. Owning stock may provide the holder with a portion of the company’s earnings, distributed as dividends. Units of stock are called shares.
What are stock charts?
A stock chart displays a stock’s price over time, with typical timeframes being daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. Investors may use stock charts to forecast price movements. Short-term traders often focus on daily and intraday data, while long-term investors typically analyse weekly and monthly charts to identify trends.
What is stock ownership?
Stock ownership is determined by the number of shares a person holds relative to the total shares issued by the company. For instance, if a company has 1,000 shares and a person owns 100, they hold 10% of the company’s assets and earnings.
What is a stock broker?
To buy stocks, you need a stockbroker licensed to purchase financial assets directly from stock markets on your behalf.
Revolut Securities Europe UAB provides customers with the ability to buy and sell stocks on a non-advisory (i.e. execution only) basis via the Revolut app, and transmits those orders to a third-party broker.
