What are passkeys?

Passkeys were collaboratively developed by major tech companies, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and the Fido Alliance, with the aim of enhancing the security and accessibility of online accounts. Passkeys generate a unique code on your device, as a secure alternative to traditional passwords.

In contrast to passwords or passcodes, which may be susceptible to being forgotten, guessed, or stolen, passkeys are locally generated and exclusive to your device. They’re not shared or stored on external servers. Passkeys can be conveniently stored in various locations, including:

  • Your browser (e.g. Chrome)
  • Apple, Google, or Microsoft devices
  • Password Manager
  • iCloud, Google, or Microsoft cloud services

What are the advantages of using passkeys?

Passkeys provide robust security by resisting common online threats such as password/passcode breaches, password/passcode enumeration, and phishing attacks.

You can sign in with a single click or tap, and completion of your device's unlock method, such as a biometric scan, PIN, or password/passcode. Passkeys can also be synchronised with your Apple, Google, or Microsoft cloud accounts, for use across all of your devices.

If you lose access to your passkey, you can sign into your Revolut account with your passcode and 2FA (two-factor authentication). Accessing and recovering your passkey happens securely within your Apple, Google, or Microsoft cloud account.
