What happens if the Revolut account holder passes away?

Coping with bereavement can be very difficult. That's why we're here to help you. However, this isn't legal advice, and we advise that you seek the help of a professional adviser, such as a lawyer with expertise in wills and estates, to help you through this process.

There are different timeframes for when a death must be registered, depending on the jurisdiction where the deceased person lived. Refer to the relevant jurisdiction's official website for further information on the process for registering a death with your local registry office.

Once you register the death, the relevant registry office will issue you with a death certificate which you'll need to handle all the deceased person's affairs, e.g. their Revolut account.

Get in touch with Revolut

You can contact us by sending us an e-mail to [email protected].

We only communicate about bereavement cases via email. If you're a Revolut customer, you can reach out to Revolut Support via the in-app chat for assistance, but we'll manage the account closure process for the deceased person's account with you via email.

Sometimes, the information we require from you may differ depending on the jurisdiction where the deceased person lived. We'll let you know if this is the case. Otherwise, you'll find the initial information we'll need below.

Personal information to provide via email to Revolut

  • Deceased person's full legal name
  • Deceased person's date of birth
  • Deceased person's phone number and email address linked to their Revolut account
  • Your full legal name
  • Your email address
  • Your relationship to the deceased person

Key documents to provide via email to Revolut

  • Your ID / passport: high-quality photo or scan of the original document with all four corners of the document visible
  • Grant of Probate, Letters of Administration, or official document stating the heir or rightful person to deal with the assets: can be provided by the District Probate Registry
  • Death certificate: this will be issued by the registrar. Depending on where the deceased lived, we may be able to accept interim death certificates, coroner's certificates, or authorised translations of overseas death certificates. We'll confirm this when we respond to you
  • Indemnity form: can be downloaded using this link, or the bereavement form – signed by the rightful heir
  • Power of Attorney: for example, if the solicitor is claiming the assets in the name of an heir
  • Birth and/or marriage certificate: we may need these to fully and properly identify the claimant

Once we receive the information we need, Revolut will:

  • Cancel all scheduled outbound payments
  • Cancel all paid services the deceased person had with us
  • Terminate all Revolut cards
  • Stop all marketing and communications
  • Inform you of everything we need to settle the estate, including the transfer of any remaining balance to the inheritor(s) or solicitor

Prior to transferring the remaining balance and account closure, any stocks, precious metals, or cryptocurrency that the deceased had bought will be liquidated and the equivalent value in fiat will be credited to the main balance of the deceased's account.

We should be in touch with you within 15 days. Depending on the complexity of the case, ongoing court proceedings, and outstanding loans, the process to withdraw any remaining balance, if relevant, and fully close the deceased's account may take from a few days to a year.
