Travel insurance for areas affected by conflict

What to do if you’re in a conflict area

If you’re currently in a region experiencing conflict, be aware of how your cover works:

  • Your travel insurance doesn't cover any claims caused by a war or act of war, whether or not one has been declared
  • If your flight is cancelled by the airline, contact them directly for a refund or to rebook travel as these types of cancellations should be handled by the carrier
  • For other medical emergencies abroad, read more in this article
  • For British nationals in a crisis abroad, contact the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
  • Other nationalities: contact your country’s department of foreign affairs or embassy

If your trip hasn't started yet

If you're planning or have a trip coming up in a region currently experiencing conflict:

  • Your policy doesn't cover travel to a destination where the FCDO has advised against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ including trip cancellation if the FCDO changes their advice after you’ve booked your trip
  • Cover doesn't apply if you cancel for a reason that's not specifically insured by your policy
  • If your trip is cancelled by your airline or the airport, contact them directly for a refund or to reschedule, these types of cancellations should be handled by the carrier and not by your insurance policy
