What is a Merchant account?

A Revolut Merchant account allows your business to accept payments made with both debit and credit cards.

When a customer makes a purchase using a credit card or debit card, the funds are first deposited into the Merchant account. Then, after 24 hours, the funds are transferred from the Merchant account to the Business account.

With a Revolut Merchant account, you can accept debit and credit card payments both in-person and online:

  • In-person transactions: make sales in person with Revolut Reader — our card reader — or through Tap To Pay on iPhone for eligible countries. You don't need to have a website to be eligible for these payment methods
  • Online transactions: for Invoices, Payment Links, or Revolut Pay. You need to have an online presence, but you don't need to have a functional ecommerce website for this. You can have a regular website, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, Instagram profile, Google Maps listing, etc
  • API and Plugin integration: process all the online payments on your website via the Revolut Payment Gateway and receive the payments directly into your Merchant account. You need to have a fully functional website and might need to provide proof of ownership

Do I need a Merchant account?

Businesses that want to accept credit card and debit card payments typically need a Merchant account.

Businesses that operate exclusively through third-party platforms or marketplaces, such as Amazon and eBay, may not need their own Merchant accounts, as these platforms often handle payment processing already.
