Why do I need to provide driver numbers for my Car Insurance?
From 31 March 2025, changes under the Road Traffic Act 2023 will require all drivers in Ireland to provide the driver number for each driver covered on a private car insurance policy.
This driver licence number data will be collected by all insurers and validated against the Department of Transport's National Vehicle and Driver File.
The data will be made available to Gardaí through the Irish Motor Insurance Database to help in the detection of uninsured drivers and help improve safety on the roads.
We'll need driver numbers for you and all named drivers on your policy when you purchase or renew your car insurance.
Where to find the driver's number on their licence
The 9-digit driver number is located on the front of your driving licence, under section 4d.
What should I do if I can't add my driver number?
If you're having trouble adding your driver number, try the following:
- Make sure you're entering the correct number from section 4d on the front of your driving licence
- Double-check that you've selected the right licence type. For example, if you have a French driving licence, choose EU — Full as your licence type
