How does the gambling block work?
The gambling block is a feature of the Revolut app that, when enabled, will block card payments that are identified as gambling. This can include payments to bookmakers, online casinos, and sports betting apps. When you open a Revolut account, it is disabled by default. To enable it:
- Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner (profile pic or initials)
- Tap 'Security'
- Select 'Gambling block'
- Toggle 'Gambling block' on (or off)
- Tap 'Yes' to confirm
We'll do our best to identify and block these card payments, but Revolut isn't liable for any successful card payments. In the US, gambling transactions are illegal and your account can be terminated if used for gambling transactions.
Which transactions will be blocked?
Card payments are transactions where you use your card details. Card payments that we suspect are for gambling purposes will be blocked. For example, if you enter your card details on an online gambling site or if you use your physical card at a betting shop, these transactions would be blocked.
However, the block doesn't affect other types of transactions, such as bank transfers or payments made through third-party apps.
How does the gambling block identify gambling payments?
Companies use merchant category codes (MCC) to classify purchases, according to the type of service the merchant provides. The gambling block will prevent payments to merchants using MCCs linked to gambling.
If companies use different MCCs to hide their gambling services, the block won't be able to prevent those transactions.
Gambling block timeframes
Once enabled, the gambling block will be active and block card payments immediately. Once the block is in place, it can't be bypassed.
If you decide to disable it, it takes up to 48 hours for the block to be lifted.
