At Revolut, we use the real exchange rate for foreign exchange (FX) also called the “interbank” rate, this means that the buy and sell rates we have are determined based on the foreign exchange market data feeds that we get from a range of different independent sources.The foreign exchange rate can be viewed on the Revolut app before exchanging currency or making a bank transfer involving foreign exchange.If you need to make a card payment or withdraw cash in a currency you can’t hold with Revolut, You can use your Revolut card and we'll automatically exchange to the correct currency at the best available rate.It's important to note that it's not mandatory to exchange money before paying with your card or withdrawing money from an ATM, any currency exchange will be done at the best rate available, regardless if it's done as an in-app exchange or an exchange for a payment.When making exchanges, some fees might apply, for more information, please check our '<a href="revolut://app/faq?key=question.will-i-be-charged-for-exchanging-foreign-currencies" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Will I be charged for exchanging currencies</a>' FAQ.You can always check what fees will be applied before completing the exchange, but you can also check the fees applied to every transaction after they're completed.

What foreign exchange rate will I get?

You can make 100 exchanges (including auto-exchanges) within 24 hours. As a Funds Transfer Business, Revolut Japan is obliged by law to cap each transaction to 1 million JPY (or equivalent in other currencies). (applicable for all types of accounts – Standard, Premium and Metal). Are there any limits for currency exchanges?

Currency exchange fees can change depending on the day, time, and the currency you want to exchange:During the week (between 6PM New York time on Sunday and 5PM New York time on Friday):No fees are charged for exchanging currencies.On weekends (between 5PM New York time on Friday and 6PM New York time on Sunday):A 1% fee applies for exchanging currencies.These fees will be applied regardless of your plan, which means that it'll be charged to Standard customers who haven't reached their FX limit, as well as Premium and Metal customers. Additionally, If you exceed the limit of 750000 JPY per 30-day period for Standard a 0.5% fee will be applied for the amount exceeding these limits.You can check your remaining allowance and the day it will be reset, at any time under '<a href="revolut://app/plan" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Plan</a>' in the 'Profile' section of the app.You will be able to review the final price and the fees breakdown before you confirm the exchange.Upgrade to <a href="https://revolut.com/app/premium" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Premium</a> or<a href="https://revolut.com/app/metal" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Metal</a> to enjoy unlimited currency exchange!

Will I be charged for exchanging foreign currencies?

Here at Revolut, the exchange rates are determined based on the foreign exchange market data feeds that we get from a range of different independent sources.All currency exchange fees will be determined by your plan, if you currently have the Standard Plan, you will have up to 750000 JPY of free exchange allowance, after exceeding this amount, a fee of 0.5% will be applied. Which Precious Metals are supported?

Revolut will not deliver physical Precious Metals to you. Where you want to exchange some or all of the Precious Metals on the Revolut app, we will credit your e-money account with the corresponding value of the Precious Metals sold.

How do we hold Precious Metals?

You can buy and sell Precious Metal positions on the Revolut platform. Please note that currently, we do not support transferring Precious Metals exposure to accounts outside the Revolut platform, e.g. to an external Precious Metals account. You can't send Precious Metal positions to others.

What can I do with my Precious Metals position?

You might have to pay taxes on your Precious Metals depending on your local legislation. Revolut does not give tax advice, so please consult with a tax advisor if unsure.

Do I have to pay taxes on my Precious Metals?

Buying and selling your Precious Metals exposure works the same way as any other currency that we support.You can use any supported FIAT currency (like Euros or Dollars) or cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin) to gain Precious Metals exposure, or exchange this exposure back to a FIAT currency or cryptocurrency.This can be done via the <a href="revolut://app/feature/commodities" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Commodities</a> section within the Wealth section of the Hub.Market Orders exchanges between Precious Metals and FIAT currencies or cryptocurrencies happen immediately at the rates provided by Revolut.You can also set up a Stop or Limit Order to automatically exchange Precious Metals at a target price in the future. Once completed, transactions cannot be reverted or cancelled.You can exchange up to a limit of 1,000,000 JPY (or an equivalent value in any other currency) per transaction.

Converting to and from Precious Metals

The commodities price you see in the app depends on whether you are buying or selling. Revolut shows you either the bid or offer based on current market rates. After you buy, you will see slightly less value than you invested because we display the value of your holdings if sold at the current bid price (which is lower than the offer where you bought).Separately, we apply a fee when you buy or sell commodities:For Standard customers, our fee is 1.5%.For Premium and Metal customers, it is 0.50%.

How much does Precious Metals exposure cost and how is it calculated?

Precious Metals trade in the interbank market, very similar to fiat currencies. There are different locations where Precious Metals can be settled, e.g. London, Zurich, etc. and the price might vary depending on location.Revolut is trading in the London interbank market for Precious Metals. The price reflects the market value of 1 troy ounce (a standard unit of measure for precious metals. It is roughly equal to 31 grams).

Sourcing and measurement of Precious Metals

Revolut keeps all Precious Metals via its trusted services partner who ensure the Precious Metals are stored in the vaults of the London Bullion Market Association. Such vaults are commonly used by banks to keep their precious metals holdings safe.In the unlikely event of Revolut’s insolvency, all Precious Metals holdings will be sold and proceeds will be credited to your account.
