Monetisable balance

What do you mean by monetisation?

According to our T&Cs, funds added to your account by any type of card (debit, credit, or prepaid) can't be used for transfers or ATM withdrawals. Such funds are treated as part of your overall balance, but not as a monetisable balance.

Since there can be a discrepancy between the monetisable and overall balance, It's important to always check the monetisable balance before a transfer or ATM withdrawal. You can still use the non-monetisable funds for purchases, such as:

  • card payments
  • paid plan subscriptions
  • in-app payments towards our products (e.g. eSIM and Lounges)
  • commodities
  • foreign currency exchanges

How can I make a transfer or withdraw funds?

If you want to make a transfer to a different financial institution or another Revolut customer, you need to have enough monetisable balance.

To check how much you currently have in the Revolut mobile app: tap your profile icon in the top-left corner → select 'Security' and 'Transaction limits'.

If you don't have enough monetisable funds, you can: add money via bank transfer (see this FAQ for more details), receive funds from another Revolut customer, receive Metal cashback.

Which funds will be used first?

Whenever possible, we'll prioritise your non-monetisable funds.

This means that whenever you make a purchase that can be covered by any type of balance (i.e. shopping), we'll first deduct it from the non-monetisable balance.

This is to ensure your convenience when using ATMs or transfers.

Rate fluctuation impacting monetisable balance

Your monetisable balance is always calculated in JPY and depends on the amount you initially topped up via bank transfer in JPY. If you exchange your JPY funds to another currency, your balance in that currency may end up being worth more than the initial top-up.

This doesn't mean that you've lost your funds, and you can still use what you've gained on the currency exchange for card purchases. For transfers and withdrawals, you may need to adjust the monetisable balance.
